Mario Puzo’s 1972 film The Godfather takes a look at a mafia family, and the violence that comes with organized crime. Honor and loyalty are one of the biggest themes in this film. It revised the gangster dramas from the 1930’s with a gangster as a tragic hero. The film has influenced all gangster movies since. The director of this film has six previous movies, but this one was a huge hit. This film put him and a few others on the radar. Everyone had known Marlin Brando from other earlier films, but for actors like Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, and Robert Duvall, it was their start at a very successful movie career. It is no surprise that it won best picture, but it is unsettling that Marlon Brando was only nominated for best actor. After all the film did gross $84 million in 1972 and had a grand total of $134 million dollars in the United States alone.
The article is from a very popular film site. This site is great because it offers a little bit of everything. In this particular article there a diagram in the middle of the page laying out the many accommodations of all three Godfather movies. This article also talks about the how it said a foundation for gangster and crime films. The article has a plot description and an actual script of the film. However, it does mention how a trilogy like this is never equally good but this is a rare case.
The Godfather was definitely the movie I have been waiting for all semester. Only seeing the film once before but I remember it being so good. I understand the entire movie fully now. You might get lost in the dark scenes or even in the story itself if your not paying full attention but I would be surprised if your not on the edge of your seat watching. A movie like this was definitely needed to set some standards for crime/ gangster movies. I feel as if This movie never existed, a lot of things would be different. I strongly suggest even your you are not a movie buff to see this movie ASAP if you have not already.
