His Girl Friday

This 1940 screwball comedy starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell defines the term romantic comedy.  The film was the breaking point for adding dialogue to the screen with enough dialogue for a 3 hour movie.  Due to the production code set in place much of the films had to be “cleaned up.”  So instead of flat out battling in any graphic ways the characters use witty dialogue, also known as verbal sparring.  The traditional roles of women were challenged as women were breaking out of just being known as “the house wife” and began wanting to have careers of their own.
With these new adjustments to the industry, many new  jobs were being offered. With the implement of sound, new actors, new technicians, and new directors were being asked to be better. Theaters had to be wired for sound. Without sound His Girl Friday would have not been as successful and the industry would not be where it is today.

This article gives us a background of the film as well as the script. By reading this article you can learn that the movie was remade and turned a male character into a female character. You can also learn the special characteristics the director brought to the film industry. This website has many articles on many films which basically lay out the entire screenplay for all movies.
In my opinion this film was “alright”, and when I say alright it’s only because the way they implemented sound. Without sound this movie wouldn’t be anything special. It is pretty cool though how he changed the character from male to female. I appreciate what this movie did for the industry and the many companies involved with film.
