The Graduate

The Graduate is a comedy-drama directed by Mike Nichols in 1967. It stars a young Dustin Hoffman as Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate who moves back in with his parents after graduation. During a graduation party his parents throw for him the wife of his father’s business partner, Mrs. Robinson (played by Anne Bancroft), asks Ben if he can give her a ride home. Things get a little awkward when Mrs. Robinson tries to seduce young Ben. The rest of the movie goes on to expose the affair the 2 have.
In class we discussed how the actresses and actors won many awards for their great acting. We also talked about the many camera angles and quick cuts. The Graduate was the first movie to do as such. The material in the film was also borderline raunchy. This could possibly be a reason why they grossed at 40 millions dollars in the box office.  This movie had many shots that framed the picture beautifully.
The article is discuss two things: one thing being the new directing style British film makers have brought to the country, and also it discusses the plot and sequences of the film. The last paragraph is about the styles of directing that Nichols uses. This was a new style of directing and was a big success. The risk he took was a big one and it paid off.
In my opinion this film was definitely a winner. I wish there wasn’t technical difficulties in class so I could have seen the true beauty of the color of the film but I understood the impact this film had on the film industry. Mike Nichols became famous because of his talent. He went on the direct several other famous movies. I would watch this film on my own time for my personal entertainment and suggest you do too.
